Ignacio Albert Smet

Research Assistant

Ignacio is a Research Assistant in the lab, working on reinforcement learning applications for intensive care. He received his BSc degree from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Madrid, Spain, where he enjoyed two academic years as a visiting student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He became part of the lab during his MRes degree in Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship at Imperial College London.

Research Brief

Ignacio's research interest focuses on applying data science tools to medical treatment and interventions. He is involved in the design process of the AI Clinician: a reinforcement learning algorithm to help tackle sepsis in intensive care. Specifically, Ignacio deals with its preclinical validation, explainability, and regulation.
